Standard Applicability:This standard establishes requirements for safety and performance testing of general purpose nebulizing systems that are expected to deliver fluids in the form of a spray to the human body continuously or breath-triggered through the respiratory system. This standard applies to pneumatic nebulizing equipment, which may be powered by compressors, piping systems, cylinders, etc., as well as electrically powered nebulizing equipment [e.g., rotating discs, ultrasonic waves, shakers (active and passive), and capillary devices] or manual nebulizing equipment. This standard does not specify minimum performance for nebulizing systems. This standard does not apply to nasal wash devices. This standard does not apply to devices that are expected to be used only to deliver moisture or hydration by delivering water in the form of aerosolized particles. This standard does not apply to specific drug delivery nebulizing devices or their components (e.g., dosing nebulizer inhalers, dosing liquid inhalers, dry powder inhalers).
