Standard Applicability:This standard: establishes a radiative force balance method for measuring the HITU acoustic field using an acoustic target; specifies a calorimetric method for determining the total emitted acoustic power of an ultrasonic transducer using a measurement of the thermal expansion of the fluid; specifies requirements for characterizing the electrical power of an ultrasonic transducer; provides recommendations for guidance on the prevention of acoustic cavitation during measurements; provides recommendations for guidance on the measurement of HITU transducers of different configurations and geometries, including collimated, divergent This standard applies to 0.5 MHz HITU transducers; provides guidance for the measurement of HITU transducers of different configurations and geometries (including collimated, diverging and converging transducers, as well as multivariate transducers); provides guidance for the selection of the most appropriate measurement method; and provides information for the assessment of the total uncertainty of the measurement. This standard applies to the measurement of ultrasonic power generated by HITU equipment in the frequency range from 0.5 MHz to 5 MHz with an upper limit of 500 W. The acoustic field may be convergent, collimated, or divergent. This standard does not validate frequencies below 500 kHz, and it is appropriate for the user to evaluate the uncertainty of power measurements and measurement systems at this frequency. This standard does not apply to ultrasound equipment used for physical therapy, lithotripsy, and routine pain relief.
